Summer Learning Challenge

SLC2017 Are you ready for a super summer? Kids 0 to 13, join the Super Explorers to stop Dr. Brain-Drain at your neighborhood library from June 19 to September 1!

During the drop-in Rahm’s Readers Summer Learning Challenge, CPL locations offer hundreds of family events, art projects, STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) activities and new books to keep kids’ brains active.

Here’s what’s going on at the Edgebrook Branch Library.


SUPER STEAM STORY TIME:

School Age Edition

Mondays, Jun 19-Aug 28, 2:30-3:15 PM • Edgebrook Library, 2nd Floor Community Room

SLC01 STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math. In this program series children will be able to observe and participate in a variety of STEAM programs geared towards school-aged children and based around the Summer Learning Challenge. For ages 6-12.

    SLC02 Join us for a Super STEAM story time with the STEAM Team! STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math. In addition to the standard story time practices of reading books, singing songs, participating in rhymes and fingerplays, children will be able to observe and participate in hands-on STEAM activities! For ages 3-7.

    SUPER EXPLORER PLAYTIME

    SLC05 Toys, puzzles, puppets and more will be available during these open play sessions giving young children the opportunity to explore at their own pace and socialize with other children their age. For ages 0-5.

    SUPER SUMMER DAYS

    Kids Music Concert

    Monday, July 10, 1:30-2:30 PM • Edgebrook Library, 2nd Floor Community Room

    SLC06 Join Chicago’s kindie songstress, Little Miss Ann, a former teacher, a mom and longtime instructor at the Old Town School of Folk Music. Little Miss Ann will be singing songs for your child to discover his or her own “superhero” powers like individuality, persistence, inner strength and compassion. Clap, dance, jump and sing along with your family at this super special music concert! For ages 0-6.

    MASKED HEROES OF READING

    Wednesday, July 5, 3:30-4:30 PM • Edgebrook Library, 2nd Floor Community Room

    SCL07 Join the Masked Heroes of Reading! Master mask maker and proprietor of Chicago’s Art Side Out Studio & Mask Shop, Jeff Semmerling, has masks on Broadway, and his work is known around the world. He will take you on an adventure exploring the making of your very own Super Hero Mask. Then preserve Peace & Justice when you play in what you’ve made. For ages 7 & up. Children ages 4-6 are welcome to attend if accompanied by an adult.

    SUPER SCIENCE HEROES

    Saturday, July 15, 11:00 AM-Noon • Edgebrook Library, 2nd Floor Community Room

    SLC08 Ever wonder how some heroes can fly, or how others can create amazing gadgets, or how fast super-speedy heroes can actually run? Well, this is the program for you! We will investigate the science behind all those super powers through hands-on science experiments and a take home item that can debunk, prove, or justify just how those powers work. For ages 6-12.

    YOU CAN BE A HERO

    Tuesday, August 8, 11:00 AM-Noon • Edgebrook Library, 2nd Floor Community Room

    SLC09 Join musician Rick Kelley for original interactive songs that will inspire kids to realize you don’t have to be the fastest or strongest or smartest to be a HERO. You just have to be kind, generous, caring and willing to help others every day. This program is guaranteed to get audiences of all ages involved with singalongs, dancealongs, musical relay races and hand motions. Plus, Rick always finds a way to work in a Limbo or a Hula Hoop contest! For ages 3 & up.

    SLC12 Calling all Summer Learning Challenge participants! Celebrate your hard work this summer by meeting ten of Animal Quest’s amazing animals!
